Service & Outreach

AFTER-MASS SOCIALS

After the 9:00 a.m. Mass, our priests and parishioners have the opportunity to meet and visit with each other while enjoying some refreshments and baked goods. This creates a community feeling among our parishioners.

Volunteers are needed to set up and serve refreshments and are scheduled to serve approximately four times per year.

Coordinators: Ron and Barb Yanko - 633-6370

ALTAR GUILD

Altar Guild was formed in 2009.  We have two teams with a team captain on each team.  Each team has men and women who help with this as we couldn't do this by ourselves.  One team cleans on the first Saturday of each month unless we have some event at church and then we move to another Saturday.  One team cleans on the third Thursday of the month.  Each team cleans only one time a month.  Usually it takes about 1 - 1 1/2 hours to clean.  On special holidays, like Christmas when decorations are taken down, then both teams join together to make the work go easier for all.

We dust, straighten, clean holy water holders, wash the holders, and replace holy water with new holy water.  The church and the chapel are the only floors that are mopped and the sweeper is run on the altar of both church and chapel.  We use Clorox sanitization sheets on all the handles and door knobs so everyone is safe from germs.  Climbing or heavy lifting is done by church maintenance and the supplies are furnished by the church.  If anyone wants something special to clean with they usually bring these items from home.

When anything is found in the church or chapel (Example - glasses, books, bibles, toys, etc.) the items are taken to the reception area and they are put in the "lost and found" box.

We do this as a labor of love and everyone is welcome to join this ministry even young people.

Coordinator:  Peggy Thorpe - 635-9184

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County is a ecumenical Christian housing ministry working in partnership with the community of Brevard County to eliminate substandard and inadequate housing by building simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with God's people in need.

OFFERTORY ACCOUNTING

This group meets each week to count the offertory and special collections. We welcome new counters.

Coordinators: Kathy Degenhardt - 305-6237 and Evelyn Bartolotta - 253-0985

OFFICE VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers answer phones, greet visitors, and perform a variety of helpful tasks for the office staff. Volunteers work one half-day per week, either 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on a regular basis, or may act as substitutes for regular volunteers on an as-needed basis. They may be called upon to help on special projects occasionally.

Coordinator: Audrey Spinney - 617-7635

PRAYER LINE

Members of this important ministry are devoted to praying daily on behalf of those parishioners who have requested prayers for special needs. The requested petition remains on the prayer line for one month unless otherwise requested or renewed by the petitioner.

The Prayer Line Ministry meets semi-annually. Members of the prayer line must be dedicated, and respect the confidentiality of the parishioners they serve.

We are always seeking new members. The basic requirement is a devotion to serious prayer time and a desire to serve our parish in a quiet manner.

REGISTRATION AND WELCOME MINISTRY

This ministry's mission is to welcome new parishioners into the St. John the Evangelist Community. In most instances, this is the first ministry encountered by new parishioners. This ministry introduces newcomers to the other parish ministries. The ministry provides a registration form that can be found at the special "Welcome" station in the lobby of the Parish Life Center.

Members of this ministry process each registration form and then forward pertinent information to other ministry coordinators to let them know someone might be interested in serving in that ministry. This ministry holds periodic welcome socials to introduce newcomers to the parish clergy and to a number of ministry coordinators.

Coordinator: Barbara Tekerman - 259-6402 and Kathy Burr - 368-3765

REJOICE CHOIR

The Rejoice Choir began 6 years ago as a small group of singers dedicated to the mission of “bringing the joy of Christ through singing to those who cannot come to us”.  Since that time the group has grown and has become a treasure for those in Autumn House, Town Square, Watersong and Wuesthoff Progressive Care.

Our concerts are performed from October through May, generally once a month except for January.  Our rehearsals are from 4 to 5:30 pm in the Choir Room and normally start in August and stop for the summer in mid-May.

What we do is truly from the heart and this is one of the most rewarding ministries.  We welcome those who would like to sing with us to contact us or simply come to a rehearsal.

Coordinator: Tony Spadafora  - 960-5000

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY

Members of this ministry work toward the goal of protecting life in all its stages. Each of us has been challenged by God to meet our obligation of love and serve all God's children. We are especially call to help and nurture those who are the most vulnerable—the unborn, the marginalized, and all victims of abuse. This group of parishioners is working toward the goal of protecting life in all its stages. Their motto: It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.

ROSARY MAKERS

The Rosary Makers meet each week at the Parish Life Center on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. During that time, they make cord and wire rosaries for the missions, as well as for friends and relatives. Most of their work, however, is done at home.

Instructions and a beginner's kit are provided. All members of the parish are invited to join this special ministry.

Coordinators: Paul and Betty Donovan - 255-6447

SOCIAL CONCERNS

The corporal works of mercy include feeding the hungry, caring for the sick and lonely, sheltering the homeless, and clothing the naked.

St. John the Evangelist Parish has undertaken various projects to help the less fortunate in our community. Acts of charity by our parishioners have provided food for the Food Pantry at St. Mary's and Ascension parishes. This is done weekly, as well as our food drives before Thanksgiving and Easter. Volunteers from the parish give of their time and talent to work at these food pantries. We also have parishioners who serve lunch at Daily Bread.

Coordinator: Al McKenna - 637-9650

SUNSHINE MINISTRY

While this ministry is primarily made up of parishioners with disabilities, it is open to all. Some of their activities include:

  • Sending "thinking of you" cards to ill parishioners listed in the weekly bulletin
  • Making prayer shawls and lap robes for the chronically ill
  • Making baby blankets as a gift to newborns
  • Preparing gift bags twice a year for shut-ins
  • Sending sympathy cards to families of deceased parishioners

The group meets monthly (except in the summer). Please consider joining this ministry that does so much to show compassion and concern for our parishioners in their time of need.

Coordinators: Kathleen Coll - 757-6298
